BUEI & Bermuda Docs Weekend Film Series

On Sunday, November 20th BUEI and Bermuda Docs present their Weekend Film Series,

3 p.m. – The People vs. Fritz Bauer (Germany/ 105 minutes / Rated: R (US)) / German with English Subtitles

The People vs. Fritz Bauer swept the German Film Awards, winning coveted ‘Lolas’ for Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Actor in a Supporting Role – and also won Best Feature awards at the Hessian Film Awards and in annual voting by the German Film Critics Association. Germany, 1957, 12 years after the war: Attorney General Fritz Bauer receives crucial evidence on the whereabouts of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann. The lieutenant-colonel, responsible for the mass deportation of Jews, is allegedly hiding in Buenos Aires. Bauer, himself Jewish, has been trying to take crimes by the Third Reich to court ever since his return from Danish exile – but with no success due to fierce German determination to repress the country’s sinister past. Because he distrusts the German justice system, Bauer contacts the Israeli secret service Mossad and, in doing so, commits treason. This is a powerful and gripping portrait of a courageous man and his battle for truth and justice.

Winner, Best Feature, German Film Awards.

“From start to finish, it’s absorbing.” – New York Times

5.15 p.m. – Cameraperson(USA / 100 minutes / Rated: PG (British Columbia))

A boxing match in Brooklyn; life in postwar Bosnia and Herzegovina; the daily routine of a Nigerian midwife; an intimate family moment at home: these scenes and others are woven into CAMERAPERSON, a tapestry of footage captured over the twenty-five-year career of documentary cinematographer Kirsten Johnson. Through a series of episodic juxtapositions, Johnson explores the relationships between image makers and their subjects, the tension between the objectivity and intervention of the camera, and the complex interaction of unfiltered reality and crafted narrative. A work that combines documentary, autobiography, and ethical inquiry, CAMERAPERSON is both a moving glimpse into one filmmaker’s personal journey and a thoughtful examination of what it means to train a camera on the world.

Winner, Best Documentary, 2016 Sheffield, San Francisco, DOXA (Vancouver), Montclair, Camden, and Sarasota film festivals.

“Cameraperson is without a doubt the best documentary of 2016, and just maybe the best film of the year, period.” – Film Experience
